2010 Census

When I was pregnant with Jacob I wanted to know what his race would be because I'm white and David is Hispanic. Not because I really cared what Jacob's race was or that it would be different than mine but I wanted to know how to fill out all those forms and what to tell him if he were to ask me about it. I just didn't want Jacob to think he was weird because he was a different race than me. So I did all this research and officially the United States government said that Jacob's race was white from Hispanic descent. Somehow I felt so much better knowing that there was a name for Jacob's mixed ethnicity.

Well I filled out our 2010 census yesterday and discovered that the United States government has changed not only Jacob's race but also David's race. Hispanic is no longer a race rather an origin. So I marked yes to the "are you of Hispanic descent" question on David's, and my sons and then next is the "what is your race question". I marked white on my sons and then I was completely stumped on David's. I actually had to google it to figure out David's race. According to Wikipedia the white race includes everyone from European, Middle Eastern, and North African descent. So since centuries ago David's ancestors came from Spain his race is white. I honestly laughed out loud when I marked David's race as white. Thanks to the 2010 census, which clearly states that Hispanic is no longer considered a race, David and I (after almost 8 years of marriage) are now the same race.

Just to note Jacob has never even hinted at the fact that he is somehow different than me. In fact he has told me before that he's sorry that my skin isn't pretty and brown like his and his dad's. So all my research was for naught. Jacob could care less what his race is and if it's different than his parents and the United States government will probably change it again in his lifetime.
And another note: Fill out your 2010 census. As an avid geneaologist census records are invaluable.
